Kestrel frames women's refuge

Kestrel Timber Frame has supplied the frames for a women’s refuge that has been constructed in the city of Lincoln.

The refuge was built by FE Peacock on behalf of Lincoln Women’s Aid and provides eleven units, each of which contains living and sleeping rooms as well as a bathroom and kitchenette. The refuge also includes a specialist unit for women with disabilities or higher support needs.

The refuge was developed for Lincoln Women’s Aid, in partnership with Lincoln City Council and Longhurst Group, which have part-funded the project together with a social housing grant from the Homes and Communities Agency. It was built to demanding environmental standards and it is designed to ensure residents live in a safe and friendly environment.

The timber frame construction used is an economical and efficient method of building, which allows for a quicker construction time. All timber is sourced from sustainable forests.

Kestrel designed the frames based on building drawings supplied by FE Peacock and manufactured them in its factory at Market Deeping before its highly experienced team delivered the frames to site and erected them. The builders were then able to construct the refuge in a fraction of the time required by conventional construction techniques.

Jamie Gilligan of Kestrel Timber Frame said: “Building using timber frames is more environmentally friendly than using more traditional methods and allows houses to be built more quickly at very high standards of quality.

“This was an unusual project for us to work on and we hope to have more bespoke projects such as this in the future.

“By using our timber frames FE Peacock was able to control its costs and reduce the amount of time taken to construct the refuge, helping it to remain ahead in the current highly competitive property market.

“This type of order from a builder that is continuing to develop properties like the Lincoln women’s refuge despite the current difficulties in the construction industry is good news – especially for a young company like Kestrel as we seek to build our business.

“Lincoln Women’s Aid had been in its previous building for about 20 years. Spread over four floors it was impossible to offer refuge to women and children who suffer from mobility difficulties.

“The purpose built refuge has enabled a major improvement to the services on offer to women and children who are victims of domestic abuse.”
